13th Street Pub Adds Some Interesting New Apps

Hyde Park's 13th Street Pub has had essentially the same menu for as long as I can remember—a fairly standard line-up of salads, sandwiches and burgers. So when I swung by for happy hour last week, I was surprised to see some more adventurous new items on the menu.

The Risotto Goat Cheese Cakes ($10) were particularly impressive—both in size and execution—with a super crispy, deep-fried exterior that gave way to soft risotto with a core of creamy, pesto-laced goat cheese. Though the accompanying chunky marinara and balsamic reduction seemed like overkill at first glance, both flavors played really well with the risotto cakes and the seared halloumi wedges.

The Devilled Eggs ($6), while not ground-breaking, were spiced up with a lovely hint of yellow curry and topped with a scattering of fresh chives. These two hefty apps were more than enough for one evening, but I’m psyched to go back and sample the Kurobuta Bacon Wrapped Dates ($12) with gorgonzola and warm honey and the Red Curry Mussels ($18) with basil, Kaffir lime leaf and coconut milk.
